What the Ten Wings are · 十翼是什麼
The Zhou Yi is two things at once. Its core text - the 64 hexagrams with their judgments and line texts - was used as a divination manual. The Ten Wings are the commentary layer, traditionally attributed to Confucius, that reads that core as philosophy: change, timing, the noble person, and the order of Heaven and Earth. The name means "ten wings" because the commentaries lift the text off the ground.
Strictly, the "ten" counts seven books - the Tuan and Xiang commentaries each split into two (upper and lower), making ten pieces in all. What follows is each in one line, with the original text available below.
The seven books · 七種
The tuan interprets each hexagram as a whole - why the judgment reads as it does. Two books, one per canon.
The xiang reads each hexagram and line as an image (the great image for the hexagram, the small images for the six lines). Two books.
An extended discussion of the first two hexagrams, Qian and Kun - the most developed commentary on the archetypal pair. One book.
The philosophical heart of the Ten Wings - the theory of change, the origins of the hexagrams, and the method of the diviner. Two books; Book I is translated in full on this page.
Explains the eight trigrams and their associations - images, directions, natures, and correspondences. One book.
Explains why the sixty-four hexagrams follow one another in the received order. One book, two parts.
Pairs the sixty-four hexagrams and contrasts them - a compressed key to the meaning of each. One book.
The Great Treatise · Book I 繫辭上傳
The philosophical heart of the Ten Wings. It explains what the Change is - where the hexagrams come from, how the sage reads them, and why "one yin, one yang is called the Way."

Heaven is honored, Earth is lowly; so Qian and Kun are fixed. Low and high are set in order; so noble and mean take their places. Activity and stillness have their constant ways; so the firm and the yielding are decided. Things gather by kind and divide by group; so fortune and misfortune arise. In heaven images take shape; on earth bodies take form; and change becomes visible. Thus the firm and the yielding rub against each other; the eight trigrams activate one another. Thunder and lightning stir them; wind and rain moisten them; sun and moon circle; one cold, one hot. The way of Qian completes the male; the way of Kun completes the female. Qian knows the great beginning; Kun brings things to completion. Qian is easy to know; Kun is simple to do. What is easy is easy to know; what is simple is easy to follow. What is easy to know draws close; what is easy to follow gains merit. What draws close can endure; what gains merit can grow great. To endure is the virtue of the worthy person; to grow great is the worthy person's work. Being easy and simple, the principle of all under heaven is grasped; once grasped, one stands within it in one's own place.

The sage set up the hexagrams and observed their images; he attached judgments to them to make fortune and misfortune clear. The firm and the yielding push each other, and change is born. Thus fortune and misfortune are images of gain and loss; regret and humiliation are images of worry and care; change is the image of advance and retreat; the firm and the yielding are images of day and night. The movement of the six lines carries the way of the three powers. Therefore what the noble person dwells in and rests in is the order of the Change; what delights and occupies them is the words of the lines. Resting, the noble person observes the images and savors the words; moving, they observe the changes and savor the readings. Thus heaven itself assists them - good fortune, nothing unfavorable.

The tuan (judgment) speaks of the images; the yao (line) speaks of the changes. Fortune and misfortune speak of gain and loss; regret and humiliation speak of small faults; no blame speaks of mending errors well. Thus rank and station rest in position; the balance of small and great rests in the hexagram; discerning fortune and misfortune rests in the words; worry over regret and humiliation rests in the boundary between them; stirring toward no blame rests in repentance. Therefore hexagrams are small and great, and their words are perilous or easy - each word points toward what it means.

The Change matches Heaven and Earth, and so can encompass the way of Heaven and Earth. Looking up it observes the patterns of heaven; looking down it examines the order of the earth; and so it knows the reasons of the dark and the light. It traces beginnings and follows endings, and so knows the teaching of life and death. Vital essence becomes things; the wandering soul brings change; and so it knows the conditions of spirits and ghosts. It is like Heaven and Earth, and so does not turn aside. Its knowing reaches all things, and its way aids all under heaven, and so it does not overreach. It moves alongside without drifting, delights in heaven and knows its portion, and so does not worry. It settles in place and is sincere in humanity, and so can love. It bounds the transformations of Heaven and Earth without overstepping, shapes all things into being without omission, and penetrates the way of day and night and knows it. Therefore the spirit has no fixed place, and the Change has no fixed form.

One yin, one yang - this is called the Way. What continues it is goodness; what completes it is nature. The humane see it and call it humane; the wise see it and call it wise; the common people use it daily without knowing it - and so the way of the noble person is rare. It shows itself in the humane, is hidden in its use, and stirs all things without sharing the sage's worries - the fullest virtue and the greatest work! Abundance is called the great work; renewal each day is called full virtue; giving life to life is called the Change; forming images is called Qian; following patterns is called Kun; exhausting the numbers to know what comes is called divination; penetrating change is called affairs; the yin-yang beyond measure is called the spirit.

How vast is the Change! How great! Spoken of as far, it meets nothing that stops it; spoken of as near, it is still and upright; spoken of between Heaven and Earth, it is complete. Qian, still, is concentrated; moving, it is straight - and so the great is born. Kun, still, is gathered; moving, it opens - and so the vast is born. Vastness and greatness match Heaven and Earth; change and passage match the four seasons; the meaning of yin and yang matches the sun and moon; the goodness of the easy and the simple matches the highest virtue.
The Master said: Is the Change not the highest! It is how the sage exalts virtue and broadens their work. Wisdom is lofty and ritual is lowly; the lofty follows Heaven, the lowly models Earth. Heaven and Earth take their places, and the Change moves within them. Completing nature and preserving it - this is the gate of the Way and of rightness.

The sage saw what is hidden in all under heaven, and shaped it into forms and images, matching each thing's pattern - and so called them images. The sage saw the movement of all under heaven, and observed its confluences and passages, to carry out the rites and standards, attaching words to decide fortune and misfortune - and so called them lines. To speak of the most hidden is not to despise it; to speak of the most moving is not to throw it into disorder. Shape it, then speak; weigh it, then act; shaping and weighing complete the changes. 'The crane calls in the shade; its young answers. I have a good cup; we share it with you.' The Master said: The noble person dwells in the house, and if their words are good, those a thousand li away respond - how much more those near at hand! Dwelling in the house, if their words are not good, those a thousand li away turn away - how much more those near! Words issue from the body and reach the people; deeds begin close at hand and become visible far away. Words and deeds are the hinge and spring of the noble person; when the hinge moves, honor and disgrace follow. Words and deeds are how the noble person stirs Heaven and Earth - how can one not be careful! 'Fellowship: first weeping and wailing, then laughing.' The Master said: In the way of the noble person one may go out or stay, speak or be silent. Two minds of one heart cut through metal; words of one mind are fragrant as orchid. 'First six: cushioning with white rushes - no blame.' The Master said: It would be enough to set it on the ground; to cushion it with rushes - what blame could there be? This is the height of care. The rush is a thin thing, yet its use is weighty. Going on with this way of care, one loses nothing. 'The noble person of toiling modesty has a good ending - good fortune.' The Master said: Toiling without boasting, having merit without taking credit - this is the fullest substance. It speaks of one who puts their merit beneath others. Virtue speaks of fullness, ritual of deference; modesty is the way of drawing near in respect to preserve one's place. 'The dragon overreaches - there is regret.' The Master said: Honored yet without position, high yet without people, the worthy below in low station without support - and so acting brings regret. 'Not leaving the courtyard and door - no blame.' The Master said: Where disorder arises, words are the stairs. If the ruler is not secret, he loses his minister; if the minister is not secret, he loses his life; if affairs of the smallest kind are not secret, they harm what is accomplished. Thus the noble person is careful and secret, and does not go out. The Master said: Did the maker of the Change know about robbers? The Change says: 'Carrying a burden and riding; bandits draw near.' Carrying a burden is the business of the mean person; riding is the vehicle of the noble person. When the mean person rides in the noble person's vehicle, robbers think of taking it. When those above are lax and those below violent, robbers think of attacking. Careless hiding teaches robbery; showy looks teach licentiousness. The Change says: 'Carrying a burden and riding; bandits draw near.' Robbers are invited.

Heaven is one, Earth two; Heaven three, Earth four; Heaven five, Earth six; Heaven seven, Earth eight; Heaven nine, Earth ten. Heaven's numbers are five, Earth's numbers five; the five positions pair with each other, and each has its match. Heaven's numbers sum to twenty-five, Earth's to thirty; together the numbers of Heaven and Earth are fifty-five. These complete the changes and set the spirits and ghosts in motion. The number of the Great Expansion is fifty, of which forty-nine are used. Divide them in two to image the two; suspend one to image the three; count off by fours to image the four seasons; gather the remainders between the fingers to image the intercalary month. Five years have two intercalary months, so there are two foldings before the next suspension.

In the Change there are four ways of the sage: for speech, one honors its words; for action, one honors its changes; for making implements, one honors its images; for divination, one honors its readings. Thus when the noble person is about to act or to move, they consult it and speak; it receives the question like an echo - nothing near or far, hidden or deep, but what is to come is known. Unless it were the utmost subtlety under heaven, who could be equal to this!

The Master said: What is the Change for? The Change opens things and completes affairs, and covers the way of all under heaven - that is all it is. Thus the sage uses it to penetrate the will of all under heaven, to settle the works of all under heaven, and to decide the doubts of all under heaven. Therefore the virtue of the yarrow is round and spiritual; the virtue of the hexagram is square and knowing; the meaning of the six lines is to change and offer. The sage washes the mind with these, retreats and hides in the secret, sharing fortune and misfortune with the people. The spirit knows what comes; the wisdom stores what has gone - who could be equal to this? One who is ancient, clear, wise, spiritually martial, and yet without killing! Thus one is clear in the way of Heaven and examines the affairs of the people, raising up the spiritual things to lead the people's use. The sage fasts and purifies by these to make the virtue spiritual. Closing the door is called Kun; opening it is called Qian; one closing and one opening is called change; coming and going without end is called passage; what appears is called an image; what takes form is called an implement; what is regulated and used is called the pattern; what the people use in coming and going is called the spirit. Thus the Change has the Supreme Ultimate, which generates the two modes; the two modes generate the four images; the four images generate the eight trigrams; the eight trigrams settle fortune and misfortune; fortune and misfortune give birth to the great work. Therefore among models and images none is greater than Heaven and Earth; among change and passage none is greater than the four seasons; among suspended images shining bright none is greater than sun and moon; among heights and honors none is greater than wealth and rank; among providing things for use, setting up implements to benefit all under heaven, none is greater than the sage; and for probing the hidden, seeking the obscure, hooking the deep, reaching the far, to settle the fortune and misfortune of all under heaven and complete its ceaseless working - none is greater than the yarrow and the tortoise. Therefore Heaven gives birth to spiritual things, and the sage models on them. Heaven and Earth change, and the sage imitates them. Heaven hangs images revealing fortune and misfortune, and the sage images them. The River brought forth the Diagram, the Luo brought forth the Writing, and the sage modeled on them. The Change has four images, to show; it attaches words, to tell; it settles fortune and misfortune, to decide.
The Change says: Helped from heaven - good fortune, nothing unfavorable. The Master said: Help is assistance. What Heaven assists is what is in accord; what people assist is trust. Walking in trust and thinking of accord, and esteeming the worthy - therefore 'helped from heaven, good fortune, nothing unfavorable.'
